Jonathan de Villiers On Pornography

Jonathan de Villiers On Pornography

Jonathan de Villiers was in touch just before the weekend to submit the images to accompany his essay in the ‘On Pornography’ section of Dress Me Up, Dress Me Down. In spite of not wishing to do a shoot or film explicitly *on* pornography (see blog entry 13 May), it seems Jonathan was able to turn an exhibition commission to shoot images of Dutch fashion that engage with nationalism and ‘Dutch-ness’ to our advantage.

On his way to Manila, Jonathan took the clothes in a bag over to Amsterdam, where he paid prostitutes to wear them for his photographs. In his accompanying e-mail (below), de Villiers describes exactly the issues of control, sexual politics and unease involved in the classic model/photographer relationship that we wanted to explore in Dress Me Up, Dress Me Down. Apparently there is also film footage of the shoot…

Subject: Re: Amsterdam sex workers

Dear Penny,

Here are a couple of shots for you.

The Asian woman is called Joy and the blonde woman is called Alicia.

They are both prostitutes in Amsterdam’s red-light district. They are

photographed where they work. Joy is wearing a white tulle dress by

Angelos Bartis and Alicia is wearing black scaled leggings and top by

Mada Van Gaans.

The main thing trying to persuade prostitutes to be photographed is

that you look and feel like a client haggling over the price.

They are for the exhibition; ‘Zoom, Eyes On Dutch Fashion’ which opens

on 4 July at Musee Galliera, musee de la Mode de la Ville de Paris, 10

Avenue Pierre 1er de Serbie, 75116 Paris.

The show runs until 21 August.

Cheers,

Jonathan
