To anyone who has experienced the loss of friends and colleagues in similar situations, and who knew Chris Hondros, the death of the Getty Images photographer in a shelling attack in Misrata, Libya on Wednesday hit home with powerful impact.

The bad news came after a day of journalistic confusion in the city where anti-Gadhafi rebels clung to a tenuous foothold against the government forces trying to dislodge them.

First reports said the well-known British photographer and film director Tim Hetherington had been killed. But the status of three wounded companions, including the US-born Hondros, remained clouded. Some reports said he was dead, others that he was wounded,
